You will learn how to add subscribers to an existing list by uploading new contacts from a CSV file or by using the Quick Add feature. This option is available for lists, not for segments. Learn more about the difference between lists and segments.

  • If you want to add a large group of subscribers, use the list upload feature.
  • If you only want to add a few subscribers, use Quick Add.

Add Subscribers via Upload

Note: When you upload a CSV file to a list that triggers a flow, the flow will begin sending to the newly uploaded subscribers. If you do not want this, set your flow to manual. After the import is complete, wait a few hours, go back to the flow, and remove the individuals you do not want to receive emails. Then, reactivate the flow.

  1. Navigate to Audience > List & Segments.
  2. Select the list you want to add subscribers to.
  3. Click the Manage List dropdown in the top-right corner.
  4. Click Import Contacts.
  1. Click Upload and select your CSV file with email subscribers.
  2. Map each column of your CSV to a corresponding property in Klaviyo.
  3. If a property doesn’t already exist in Klaviyo, type a new property name and click Create New Field.
  1. Click Next.
  2. If you have explicit permission from everyone in your CSV file to send email marketing, select the option Yes, update subscription status for all imported contacts to subscribed. If your CSV file contains both email addresses and phone numbers, select which channels they have subscribed to.
  3. Click Import.

Subscribing contacts via list upload indicates that you have received explicit permission to send email marketing to all contacts in this upload. Manual suppressions and suppressions from recipients who have unsubscribed will be lifted when the upload is processed.

Upload via Copy/Paste

As an alternative to uploading a CSV file, you can copy and paste a list of subscribers to upload them.

  1. Navigate to Audience > List & Segments.
  2. Select the list you want to add subscribers to.
  3. Click the Manage List dropdown in the top-right corner.
  4. Click Import Contacts.
  5. Click Copy/Paste CSV in the bottom-left corner of the upload tool.
  1. Paste the contact information in this format:

Email, First Name, Last Name

someone1@example.com, George, Washington

someone2@example.com, Abraham, Lincoln

  1. Click Next.
  2. Map each column of your upload to a corresponding property in Klaviyo.
  3. If you have explicit permission from everyone on your list to send email marketing, select the option Yes, update subscription status for all imported contacts to subscribed. If your list contains both email addresses and phone numbers, select which channel(s) they have subscribed to.
  4. Click Import.

Add Subscribers via Quick Add

If you want to quickly add a few people to your list, you can use the Quick Add option instead.

  1. Go to the list where you want to add the profile.
  2. Click on Quick Add.
  1. On the next page, fill in the email field.
  2. If the person has explicitly agreed to receive emails from you, check the box Profile has granted explicit consent to receive email marketing.
  3. Click Add subscriber.

Best Practices

Keep the following in mind:

  • Never add contacts to a list who have not consciously opted in – this is against Klaviyo’s terms of use.
  • Klaviyo automatically prevents duplicate subscribers from being added to the same list. This means that if you upload a file with subscribers already on your list, these duplicate records will not be added. For example, if you want to add a custom property to everyone in a list, you can safely re-upload the list with the custom property without creating duplicate profiles.
  • Klaviyo automatically skips email addresses that are not in a valid format. A valid email address, such as jane@example.com, consists of a local part, an "@" symbol, and then a domain part, which is not case-sensitive. If any of these required parts of a valid email address are missing, Klaviyo will consider the email invalid. If there are incorrect spaces in the email address, Klaviyo will also mark the email as invalid.
