Over het merk

Ilya

ILJA is the brand founded by Ilja Visser. Ilja Visser (born April 15, 1978, in IJsselstein) graduated in 2001 from the ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem, where she studied Fashion Design. In 2005, she launched her couture line 'ILJA', followed in 2007 by her prêt-à-porter line 'Ready to Fish'. Three years later, Visser founded her own fashion house under the name Ilja Visser Group, based on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. In 2011, she received the Fashion Stipend Award from the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund and held a show at the Rijksmuseum that same year. In 2013, she exhibited her couture line at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann in Paris.

The new brand initially referenced her couture background with a wink, but the goal was to take a much more commercial approach. With Ilja 2.0, the focus was solely on online sales. As a sublabel, there’s Suits & Softs by ILJA, a suit brand for women. We worked on it for just over a year, but due to COVID, we experienced a year-long delay and officially launched in January. The "suits" part speaks for itself, while "softs" refers to sweatsuits.

The brand has a special story, as we aim to produce as sustainably as possible. Typically, textile production involves massive water consumption and chemical dye usage, which is highly harmful to the environment. Instead, we travel to factories in Portugal and purchase leftover fabrics from major brands. These are beautiful materials that would otherwise be left to waste in huge warehouses. We use them to create our suits, which are therefore always limited edition. Once a piece is sold out, it’s truly gone — we don’t restock.

Our sweatsuits are made from organic cotton and recycled polyester, and, like our suits, they are produced in the Netherlands. We also offer a few couture dresses with a nod to Ilja’s couture roots, all handmade in Amsterdam. In this way, we try to keep everything as local as possible and contribute to a more responsible fashion industry. We don’t launch massive collections and keep inventory minimal.

Since Ilja was essentially starting fresh, this was a test collection where we only offered sizes S, M, and L. It was somewhat risky not knowing exactly how the fit would work out or who our audience would be. However, thanks to data insights — in part gathered through our collaboration with Polaris Growth, which I’ll elaborate on shortly — we discovered that our primary audience consists of women aged 25–34. That was somewhat surprising to us, but it also made sense. This group is often just starting their careers and looking for a suit that’s not outrageously expensive but still a step above fast fashion options like Zara. The back of our suits is embroidered, making each one truly unique. Besides young professionals, many mothers also wear our suits — women who want to add something special to their outfit without going too mainstream.

De Uitdaging

We are with a small team, where Ilja, as a creative brain, mainly focuses on design. I'm kind of her right hand, who is more concerned with the business side, but also oversees the webshop. Since “we” do not have the technical knowledge ourselves, we came into contact with experts in the field, who ultimately brought us to Polaris Growth. Indeed, there was a need for an online marketer who could help us with our visibility on Google, but also with ads on various channels. Initially, we started working with a Facebook & Instagram expert. He has set up several campaigns on these channels, but we lacked expertise in the field of Google Analytics. He was also the one who emphasized the importance of putting energy into visibility on Google and collecting all data from different channels in one place. He then wanted to introduce us to Omar and Ewoud, because he had heard a lot of good stories about them and had worked with them before. That's where it started, after which we scheduled a meeting with our team and Omar & Ewoud. Polaris Growth was going to set up Google Analytics and Little Data for us, and the team was then eager to set up Klaviyo for us. However, we had just set up ActiveCampaign with another party and paid for it, so we couldn't just reverse it back then. That's why we parked Klaviyo at that time. It's not that we regret that, but we are now actively looking to switch to Klaviyo. All I hear are stories about how well that works with automations and how it works even better than ActiveCampaign. So soon we will probably talk to Polaris Growth to set up Klaviyo for us.

Polaris Growth linked Google Analytics to the webshop, and they handled it quickly and efficiently.

We got in touch with Polaris Growth very last minute, and everything had to move quickly because we were about to go live. We started working together in the last week of January, and within just a few days, they had everything set up. Polaris Growth connected Google Analytics to our webshop, and they handled it quickly and efficiently.

Since I was going to take over the Google Analytics part, Omar walked me through it and explained everything. It was incredibly helpful that he took the time to show me how to read the data and run A/B tests, for example.

That’s as far as we’ve gotten so far. We’re a small team, and going live meant we had a lot on our plate at the time. We haven’t yet had the chance to set up all the email automations. I think it would be a good idea to schedule a meeting soon to figure out how we want to approach that. It would be really valuable for us if Polaris Growth could help take our data collection and email marketing to the next level.

Resultaten volgens onze klant

We didn’t have a very intensive collaboration or a large-scale project. That said, I was really happy with how involved Polaris Growth was, and the team was easy to meet with online. They were also genuinely interested — which is important — and we had some great conversations. Honestly, everything went smoothly, and I think we’ll likely continue working together in the future.
